Like me, many of you may use an electric bottle steam steriliser instead of soaking bottles in sterilising fluid. I have to say, having used both methods, that I prefer to steam sterilise as it is quick and there are no harsh smells. I understand that there is still the need to use the liquid method as some things cannot be steamed. For example, some baby spoons or teething toys.
What can I use to naturally descale my steriliser that has no chemicals?
I can’t tell you the number of times I have accidentally splashed sterilising fluid on my clothes or towels, and it has made a stain. I thought: if it is doing this on fabrics what is it doing for my baby? So I use lemon juice. Read my step by step guide below to find out how I do it.
What steriliser do you use?
I have used the Tommee Tippee steriliser starting from when my daughter was born. It fits 3-4 bottles for me, and I have added some dummies as well. If you have used other that you prefer, please get in touch – would love to hear your thoughts.
Cleaning process
I am sure that there are many other methods for cleaning but the method I prefer is done by using lemon juice! Here is my step by step process:
- Remove all bottles and trays from the steriliser. This is a good opportunity to soak them in some warm water/ washing up liquid and clean the trays!
- Add a small amount of water and a good measure of the lemon juice. I use bottled lemon juice so I can store it in the kitchen cupboard, but I suppose fresh will do fine.
- Put the steriliser on (usually for 3-5 minutes) but not until all the liquid is steamed away as this can cause the lemon to burn.
- You can leave this to sit if you have time. If not empty the liquid and wipe with a clean tissue.
- If it is not entirely clean you can repeat the process with the lemon.
Once all is clean, add clean water and sterilise. I do this to reduce any smell of lemon and remove any fibres that may have been left by the tissue. Remove the water and it is clean.
- Baby constipation: naturally solving the problemBaby constipation can be a stressful time for babies and parents. Like me, you may wish you could do something to help! There are many kinds of baby constipation and does not solely mean your baby cannot poo. How can you spot if your baby is constipated? They are pooing less frequently, if at all…
